Single review: Casey- 'Teeth'

Haunting and melodic from the get go Casey's single 'Teeth' is something of a feat for the newly formed Welsh band.

Upon first listen of 'Teeth' you'd be excused for presuming the band's members have been working together for years; with high production values and an inate sense of 'knowing what they're doing' it's hard to comprehend that their fromation only occured just over a year ago. Especially when it becomes apparent mid track that they've managed to bring something new to the already oversaturated melodic hardcore scene.

Fans of 'Being as an Ocean' and 'Touche Amore' will feel at home with 'Teeth' as, typically of this genre, it eases us in with a pleasing and soft guitar lead intro, only to then pummel us with a powerful drum beat and cutting vocals. Just like the instrumentals the lyrics are in a class of their own on this track, phrases such as: 'I miss your bones beneath my sheets' and 'Your name is stitched into my teeth and everytime I talk I feel you there' are only made more powerful by the hammering rythmn and emotion behind them. Casey are almost magical in the way they stir up hard hitting emotions, there's an honesty behind the lead singer Tom's vocals that lets us feel a pain, even if we can't relate to it.

When it comes to their emotive power the band say it best themselves:

'Casey is a means of self-expression created with no underlying motive, only the wish to experience and relate.'

Originality is key with breaking into the current melodic hardcore scene and 'Teeth' seems to be the evocative 'kick up the arse' the genre so desperately needed. The track alone is a testament to the band's talent but when paired with their other released singles 'Fade' and 'Hell' Casey cement the fact that they're a haunting, evocative and powerful force to be reckoned with.
